Your fall pond maintenance checklist starts with keeping leaves out of the water, then uses pond temperature to time feeding and equipment changes. For a small backyard pond, that means cleaning up organic debris while the water is accessible and preparing for ice only if your winters call for it.

Leaves and dying plants consume oxygen as they decay, a greater concern when ice limits gas exchange. Koi and goldfish also slow down as the water cools. A pond thermometer gives you a better cue than the date or the afternoon air temperature.

1. Check Water Temperature With a Pond Thermometer

  • Ultrasonically welded, recycled polycarbonate main body
  • Soft silicone outer case
  • Large ultrasonic polycarbonate screen with a UV filter

Measure your pond’s water temperature regularly so you can time cold-weather care to the conditions your fish experience. Take readings in the same area and at a consistent depth, away from a waterfall or shallow edge that heats and cools quickly.

Keep track as the water approaches 60°F, 55°F, and 50°F. Those readings guide the feeding and treatment steps below; a single chilly night does not necessarily mean the pond has reached its winter temperature. For more on readings at different depths, see the pond water temperature guide.

2. Install Pond Netting Before Leaves Fall

Stretch pond netting over the water before nearby trees begin their main leaf drop. A taut net catches dry leaves before they become waterlogged, sink, and add to the muck on the bottom.

Raise the net above the surface where your pond’s shape allows, and secure the edges so wind cannot pull them into the water. Check it during heavy leaf fall and lift off collected debris before its weight makes the mesh sag. If wildlife uses your pond, leave a safe route at the edge so small animals can get in and out.

3. Skim Floating Leaves and Debris

Bestseller No. 1

Skim floating leaves before they sink, even when netting covers most of your pond. Wind can carry debris through gaps, while seed heads and plant fragments collect along the edges.

Sweep a long-handled pond net gently around plant baskets and fish resting areas. Check the surface skimmer basket during heavy leaf drop; a packed basket restricts water flow. Weekly skimming is a workable starting rhythm, with more frequent passes when trees are shedding heavily.

4. Vacuum Muck From the Pond Bottom

  • High-power suction to a depth of 59 inch.Maximum suction depth of 78 inch.Suction hose length: 13 ft
  • Power consumption: 1200-1400w

Remove accumulated leaf sludge and fish waste with a pond vacuum while the water is still accessible. Focus on visible deposits along shelves, beside rocks, and in quiet corners where debris settles.

Work slowly so you do not stir a thick cloud through the pond or disturb fish unnecessarily. A routine fall cleanup does not require draining your garden pond; you can clean the bottom without draining the water. If vacuuming removes water, refill gradually with dechlorinated water close to the pond’s temperature.

5. Trim Hardy Plants and Move Tropical Plants Indoors

Cut away dead or dying growth from hardy pond plants before it decays in the water. Trim hardy water lily foliage near its base, and move potted hardy plants from shallow shelves to a depth where their roots will remain below the ice.

Lift tropical water lilies and other frost-sensitive plants before the first hard freeze. Give plants you intend to keep the indoor light and water conditions their species requires; remove unwanted floating plants from the pond and dispose of them responsibly.

Your pond plant overwintering plan should reflect each plant’s hardiness and your local winter temperatures.

6. Switch Fish to Wheat-Germ Food at 60°F

At about 60°F water temperature, switch feeding koi and goldfish to a wheat-germ-based fall food. As their metabolism slows, offer smaller portions and remove pellets they leave behind.

Watch how readily your fish come up to eat. Cool water reduces their appetite, so their response helps you adjust the amount between temperature readings. The wheat-germ food options for koi are formulated for this seasonal transition.

7. Add Cold-Water Beneficial Bacteria at 55°F

  • Maintains Clean, Clear, Healthy Pond Water – Supports natural biological balance during cold weather
  • Formulated for Cold Water Below 50°F – Keeps working when standard bacteria treatments slow down
  • 10 Pure Strains of Concentrated Beneficial Bacteria – Helps control sludge and improve overall water clarity

At about 55°F, use a beneficial bacteria treatment whose label includes that water temperature. Cold-water formulas have different operating ranges: some are intended for water in the 35°F to 60°F range, while others specify use below 50°F.

Dose for your pond’s water volume and follow the product’s schedule. Add it where water circulates so it disperses through the pond. Bacteria support waste breakdown, but physical removal remains your main defense against a heavy layer of leaves or sludge.

8. Clean the Filter and Shut Down the UV Clarifier at 50°F

OASE Vitronic 18 UV Clarifier for Pond
  • Powerful 18 watt UV bulb for maximum cleaning results in a crystal clear pond by eliminating green water
  • Easily integrates into an existing or new pond system
  • For best results, connect to an OASE BioSmart biological filter

Around 50°F, clear debris from your filter and shut down the UV clarifier if you no longer need it for green-water control. Empty settlement chambers and rinse clogged mechanical pads so water can pass freely.

If the biological filter will keep running, gently swish its media in pond water and return it promptly. Established bacteria on that media help process fish waste. Drain and protect a shut-down UV unit according to its manual before freezing weather can damage water-filled parts.

9. Stop Feeding Fish at 50°F

  • ✔Premium quality, Built from Durable Material & Shatter Resistant

Stop feeding koi and goldfish when pond water drops below 50°F. Their digestion and appetite slow in cold water, and uneaten pellets add waste at a time when biological filtration is also less active.

Keep checking the thermometer through fall temperature swings. A warm afternoon alone is a poor reason to resume feeding if the pond remains cold. You can continue observing your fish from the edge for unusual behavior without disturbing the deeper water where they settle.

10. Run or Store the Pump Based on Your Winter Conditions

Keep your pump running through winter only if the pump, plumbing, and water route can operate safely in your expected freezes. In a mild climate, continued circulation may be practical. Where exposed pipes, a shallow stream, or a waterfall can ice over, shutdown protects equipment and helps prevent water from being diverted out of the pond.

For shutdown, disconnect and clean the pump, drain vulnerable plumbing, and store equipment as its manufacturer directs. If your frost-protected pump stays on in a freezing climate, position its intake above the deepest water so circulation does not draw the warmer water where fish rest up to the icy surface. Check running systems throughout winter for ice buildup and falling water levels.

11. Inspect the Aerator and Position It for Winter

  • Complete Aerator System: Includes two weighted 4-inch aeration discs, two 25-foot rolls of 3/16-inch silicone airline, and preassembled...

Inspect your aerator before freezing weather, then place its air stone or diffuser in a shallow area of the pond. Clear blocked diffusers, check airline tubing for cracks, and confirm that bubbles reach the surface.

Shallow placement encourages surface movement while leaving deeper winter water less disturbed. If you shut down the main pump in a fish pond, an appropriately placed aerator provides another way to support oxygen exchange. Keep the air pump sheltered as its instructions require, and check its airflow during cold spells.

12. Install a Pond De-Icer Where Ice May Seal the Surface

Use a pond de-icer if sustained freezing weather could seal the surface of your fish pond. It keeps a small opening for gas exchange; it is not intended to warm the entire pond.

Choose a unit rated for your pond and install it according to its instructions, with electrical connections protected from moisture. Check the opening after hard freezes, especially if you rely on an aerator as well. If ice closes over, avoid striking it: the shock can harm fish resting beneath the surface.
