The Western states have been experiencing very tight water supplies, which in turn has led to complex rules and laws meant to ensure that bodies of water are either put into use or sent downstream to help others.
In areas where there is not enough water for use, man-made ponds have to have a legal way to store water (or expose it to evaporation). According to the Division of Water Resources (DWR) in Colorado, man-made ponds consume water that is entitled to senior water rights which cannot be allowed without proper authorization; this has led the DWR to systematically review ponds in several areas of Colorado.
With this being said, be sure to check the legality of your pond! If you are new to the pond scene, make sure to check the laws and regulations in your area before you begin. Water features become the focal point of any yard – we want to make sure they are taken care of environmentally and legally speaking.
After reviewing any regulations, it’s important to know where to start your pond journey; what stores to use and where to go. This list of pond supply stores in Colorado is designed to help you find a store that fits your needs. Your water feature has a natural ability to attract birds, butterflies, and more, so check out the aquatic plant sections of the stores below, too!
